Oscar Style 2013: Red Carpet Hits and Misses by josie

Helen Hunt, nominated at the 2013 Academy Awards for her role in “The Sessions,” paired an H&M dress with $700,000 worth of jewels.

Long before the first Oscar statuette is handed out, another group of winners emerges on the red carpet outside Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre: the women who love glamorous fashion and know how to rock it. Case in point: the striking Charlize Theron in a stunning strapless white peplum Dior Haute Couture gown, nominee Jessica Chastain in a sleek Armani column with pink-on-copper beading, and Jane Fonda, serving as the best endorsement for her yoga workout videos in a form-fitting bright yellow Versace. Can you believe Fonda is 75?

Strapless dresses of all shapes and colors were in evidence. Working the trend: Kerry Washington in a coral-red Miu Miu with a jewel-encrusted bodice, Jennifer Garner in a custom plum Gucci with ruffles down the back, Amy Adams in a dove gray Oscar de la Renta ball gown and Jennifer Aniston in a tomato-red Valentino ball gown that she deemed “very King & I.

Reese Witherspoon also went strapless in cobalt Louis Vuitton, wearing one of the many shades of blue seen on the carpet, from Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts in royal velvet gown by Marc Bouwer to Best Actress nominee (and 75th birthday celebrant) Emmanuelle Riva in a Lanvin ensemble. Salma Hayek wore a midnight Alexander McQueen with a gold beaded halter and nominee Helen Hunt donned a navy dress from H&M that she accessorized with $700,000 in jewels. How’s that for mixing high and low?

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger both channeled the Oscar statuette in spectacular gold metallic, body-hugging gowns by Zuhair Murad and Carolina Herrera respectively, while nominee Naomi Watts sparkled in a gunmetal Armani Privé with a cutout that bared one shoulder. Skyfall’s Naomie Harris wore a gold gown with a beaded, embroidered bodice by Michael Badger, winner of the Red Carpet Green Dress Challenge. It was made from organic silk crêpe de chine with natural dyes, as well as vintage glass beads and recycled zippers and candy wrappers, and it’s 100 percent biodegradable!

Black was far from basic on Sandra Bullock, in an intricately beaded Elie Saab Haute Couture gown, Kristin Chenoweth in a Tony Ward dress with a silver-on-sheer bodice, Nicole Kidman in a heavily beaded black and gold column by L’Wren Scott, and Halle Berry in a custom black-and-silver striped Versace that was as sexy as the skin-baring outfits she usually favors.

Curvy women who ruled the red carpet this year included Octavia Spencer in a frothy off-shoulder French vanilla ball gown by Tadashi Shoji, Melissa McCarthy in a gray, jewel-embellished David Meister, Queen Latifah in an elegant white Badgley Mischka with silver beading, and nominee Jacki Weaver in a wine satin Rani Zakhem with an embroidered bodice.

Even at the Oscars, there are always fashion faux pas, and Helena Bonham Carter is a perpetual offender, this time for a frumpy Vivienne Westwood. Sally Field’s red Valentino Couture was a little too sheer. Meryl Streep’s silver metallic gown, though similar in shape to the gold Lanvin she wore last year when she won Best Actress, wasn’t half as flattering. And though Streep’s dress didn’t trip her up like Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence‘s Dior Couture gown famously did, Streep explained she’d been stepping on her dress after she could be seen adjusting her gown as she walked onstage to present the Best Actor award. Even the veterans of awards shows are sometimes foiled by fashion.
